6-11 July 2009 in Strasbourg (France) in the Council of Europe was held the 4th Summer University for Democracy. More than 600 participants from 16 countries of Europe took part in discussion of the main topic “Global challenge to democracy”. Among participants were famous European political leaders – presidents of countries, prime-ministers, ministers, ambassadors, representatives of different countries in the Council of Europe and European Parliament, as well as political scientists, representatives of European political institutions etc.
Oleksandra Pavlenko, attorney-at-law, partner with Pavlenko & Poberezhnyuk, Law group was a part of Ukrainian delegation of Ukrainian school of political studies. As an official speaker of Ukrainian delegation O. Pavlenko reported on the topic “Business and democracy in the CIS countries – whether these concepts are compatible” during working session devoted to business sector. In the report O. Pavlenko analyzed the post-Soviet business territory, level of democracy in the CIS countries and business relation, as well as possible things in common of democracy and business. Within the 4th Summer University for Democracy O. Pavlenko also was a moderator and speaker at conference “Business and democracy” jointly with the EDRD Head of Administrative Council as well as with the the Council of Europe Vice-president of Parliament Assembly and the Head of Ukrainian school of political studies. Following the results of the conference “Business and democracy” the report of Mrs. Pavlenko has been recognized as the most resonance and caused vivid discussion among participants.
In the course of the visit participants of the 4th Summer University for Democracy attended the European Court for Human Rights where they met Ukraine’s representative before the ECHR. Moreover, they participated in a number of events, organized by the Council of Europe jointly with the European school of political studies, including the meeting with a representative of Ukraine to the Council of Europe and took part in the reception on behalf of the Secretary general of the Council of Europe, mayor of Strasbourg and Counsel general of Japan under the Council of Europe.
